2018 SMRP Symposium Features Operations Executive Keynote

SMRP goes to Washington

In March, members of the Company for Professional Maintenance and Reliability (SMRP) met at the Capitol in Washington, DC to meet with Congressional leaders on obstacles and opportunities to strengthen the manufacturing industry and the US workforce. During the visit, three groups of SMRP members met senators and 19 representatives of the United States and their staff on the committee on vocational and vocational education (CTE), the National Security Committee and the Senate Committee on Health, Education , Work and pensions, among others.

SMRP President Larry Hoing, WCRP, CMRT and Personal Care Manager of Wells Enterprises Inc., spoke with their Impressions Plant Services as a member of the fly team this year and SMRP targets for their next visit in 2018

This is our third year (on a government trip). We started in 2015, and we actually came from some different interests within the SMRP organization because we knew that there were a lot of different moving parts that have affected the community maintenance and reliability. Howard Penrose is one of the first people involved, then through Kellen staff who helped the SMRP, some interest has been developed there.

In 2015, we had our first fly-in, actually just to provide SMRP people on the hill. Honestly, you can not do anything unless you have a recognized name, so we went there to introduce ourselves and say. "Hey, we're here. This is our organization this is what we talk about." And the message the first year was: "How can we help" No "how can you help us. This is how we can help you.

We were greeted with open arms practically almost all the offices we entered with shiny faces, since they did not ask us for anything. We have something, and this offer was the experience of our members, "How can we help you adopt good legislation by asking people who have good experience and help you understand what is happening on the ground floor -from?"

PS: What are the four focus groups of sensitization training-SMRP in scope forecast?

LH: Four SMRP scope focus groups follow the same policy areas as SMRP stands out in their government relations program. These groups will focus on work development, security, critical infrastructure and cyber security. They will be composed of five to 10 members of the SMRP will determine the strategy and the specific initiatives that follow each group.

PS: Given the different interests of different groups that SMRP Met, who was the team of different goals in the meeting with each committee or was it a coherent message of development of the workforce?

LH: Yes, it was pretty consistent with what we had in the past, but with a little heavier interest. For example, if we talk about the evolution of Perkins labor legislation passed in the House, but it was not approved in the Senate. Last year, we wrote an opinion piece (http://plnt.sv/1705-SMRP), came up the hill, trying to convince people. We want to keep up the pressure and let them know that this is a big problem for the industry in America.

Many of our members tell us of this great wave that takes place with the baby boom started to hit. And what happens, we no longer have the pipe built in America for children to learn in college, you know, buy, bend metal, cut wood, you know, working on their hands and understanding some of Physical Sciences. They no longer have to.

When they leave high school, everyone thinks they need to get a white collar working and a four year degree, so the tubing is empty. With this great wave passing, all this knowledge outside our manufacturing plant, there is nothing to replace it. Companies spend a lot of money to train people when they get there, and if you think the economics point of view, the price of your car (in my case, the ice cream cone), the price of everything you have manufactured In the United States, because companies uphold this bill, because people do not get the technical skills we need to replace (because) the big wave that breaks.

It's a small aspect of job development: how can lawmakers help create good behavior in school districts, colleges, community colleges so we build this work of working in order not to lose our tax base? Basically, you know, production is a big part of the tax base here in America and we can not survive a service economy.

We also did a job recently with the Health and Safety Administration (OSHA). I attended one of their meetings last year to help write some of the new regulations, so we also have one of our conferences. So many great relationships are built and training. PS: Director of Government Relations for SMRP, John Ferraro, commented that there is a link between energy infrastructure and cyber security and investment in education at work. Do you feel that this message was well received by the communities with which you spoke?

LH: Yes, I think so. If we are going to increase our infrastructure if we are going to launch $ 1 billion in infrastructure, if we are going to work around cyber security, tell me where it will ensure that people do. We can take all the money in the world and try to create concrete, metal and all these other things, but if we do not have the people to put in the law and how to do it and have the technical Des skills to do these things then we mock from ourselves.

There is a direct correlation between the skills we have. Everyone wants (of goods) to be built in America and must be done to the tax base. But if we do not have people firing, this will be much more difficult. There is also a direct correlation between the technical and technical knowledge we have to help protect against any cyber attack. All of these things are very well connected with the development of the workforce and having a good job developed in different regions of the country.

PS: As for the future, what is the short term based on these meetings, and expect another fly in 2018?

LH: Yes, we have tentative plans under consideration. We just developed and started in the four focus groups I mentioned earlier, our members members are more involved with these groups, and the plan is to take each Hill discussion group and organize specific meetings. For example, in the first place, the development of work and the workforce of the development group, which will do so in Washington, DC, will be a specific goal in the development of labor force and in that.

There is more than one link that is happening out there in our relationships with these groups (government), and there is more trust. They bring us closer. You know, most of these representatives and senators would like to talk to someone in your district. When we are able to take someone to the office, for example, if I am in the office of Senator Joni Ernst (R-IA) and Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who are very interested in hearing Only in what we are as an organization, but in what (problems arise), Iowa or Ohio, or anything.


These are very good connections to be able to make. Then we can say, "Hey, you know, this business is centered in Ohio; they're in SMRP and they're a major source of employment," and it's fair to say that these companies are interested in developing the workforce. We make these partnerships and establish SMRP relationships, not just SMRP but our members have voice and have the opportunity to say, "Hey, come talk to us, and we'll give you at least what happens on the ground floor."

PS: building relationships, instead of going to ask for something and that's it.

LH: Good. And we will not do it in politics. When we come across some of these offices, we try to satisfy both sides of the corridor, you know, the majority and the minority in many of these offices. We try to ensure that the stallions, so we are not talking about just one side or the other. It is not a partial apolitical approach, so to speak.

I think this is a positive turn. I think it's different from what might be considered lobbying, saying, "Hey, go and do this. We need you to do that." We say, 'How can we help? "Simply giving our experience and then helping lawmakers to take good laws from there.
